My Te Papa slide but Item one

Item 1: (What is it?)

This is a Tā moko in the 19th century

It shows a tattoo on his face which  indicates his identity through whakapapa/genealogy

An interesting fact about this is that  uhi/chisels were carved into the face as if it were a piece of wood, tattooing chisels were made from the bones of seabirds and the design was drawn on the face with charcoal and water when the tohunga/expert began to apply the moko he would dip his uhi into the pigment and make the incisions by tapping it with a small mallet or fern stalk, mallet was also used for wiping away the blood

I chose this because it's a declaration of who you are.
